2009-2010 : The restoration of the antechamber of the Grand Couvert

The restoration and the refurnishing of the antechamber of the Queen’s Grand Couvert in 2009-2010 marked the beginning of a new operation in the apartments of Versailles to provide a better presentation to the visitors of the functions and uses of the apartments.

The paintings of the ceiling of the room, works by Vignon and Paillet, and the stucco decorations were restored thanks to the support of Cognacs Martell. The room was laid out to evoke the “Grand Couvert”, the special meal of the couple royal, or the royal family, served in public on certain occasions. To evoke this special ritual of the court etiquette of Versailles, the royal table was recreated with the loan of tableware from the Department of Objets d’Art of the Louvre museum, and the walls were covered with Gobelins tapestries loaned by the Mobilier national.
